MACOMB, Ill. -- Eastern Illinois men's and women's swimming finished up a pair of double-duals on Saturday (Feb. 17), as the Panthers faced the host Western Illinois squad, as well as South Dakota, over the last two days.
For the weekend, the men dropped both duals to the Leathernecks and Coyotes each day, while the EIU women fell twice to USD, but earned two dual sweeps of arch-rival WIU.
In Friday (Feb. 16) action, newcomer
Amy Smith was the lone Panther individual swimmer to earn a first place honor as she touched the wall ahead of the competition in the 100-Back via a time of 1:01.23.
Six EIU swimmers also added several second place honors, including
Steve Fishman in the 200-Free,
Kaylee Morris in her 50-Free race,
Brogan O'Doherty in the 100-Back, and the women's foursome of
Melissa Hepler,
Danielle DiMatteo, Morris, and
Kelsey Ferguson in the 400-Free Relay.
Friday team scores had the EIU women downing WIU, 116-85, but falling to USD, 185-62. Â The men, meanwhile, fell to both the Leathernecks and Coyotes by respective 128-66 and 162-60 dual scores.
On Saturday, Smith once again touched first in her 100-Back race, this time setting a new personal best time of 59.52, which continues to rank as the 7th fastest Panther time. O'Doherty followed with his own first place mark in his 100-Back via a time of 52.95.
Morris also tallied a first place finish in the 100-Free with a time of 55.30 and Fishman led the EIU men by winning the 200-Back in 1:56.83 and
Jake Roberts was victorious in the 1000-Free (10:15.54).
Six Panthers nabbed additional runner-up kudos, including
Fallyn Schwake in the 100-Free,
Shane Witzki in the 50-Free, and the team of Smith, Ferguson, DiMatteo, and Morris in the 200-Medley Relay.
At the end of the day Saturday, the Panther women downed WIU by seven points, 130-123, but lost to South Dakota, 196-76. The guys, meanwhile, dropped each matchup to WIU and USD off respective 138.5-105.5 and 186-88 team scores.
Both Eastern squads return to the pool next Saturday (Feb. 24), traveling to Valparaiso, Indiana for a rematch with Valpo at 1 p.m. Earlier this year, both Panther units splashed past the Crusaders at home in a dual sweep.
